Jaya Mansberger has offered here Plus 1 invite to Chloe Le Tissier:
In Chloe Le Tissier’s paintings animals are depicted in imagined landscapes juxtaposed from photos and magazines, and from life drawing and memory. On closer inspection the creatures do not belong to the landscapes, they are at odds with their surroundings, for example a lone penguin in a forest or a monkey and parrot perching on the back of a dog on a pink cliff path. Through these magical and playful scenarios a sense that something has just happened or is just about to happen is invoked. Also central to Chloe’s work is the bringing together of more abstract mark making with realistic depiction, which contributes to the ambiguous and dream-like atmosphere in the paintings.

Plus 1- Matt Blackler
A Day At The Frontier. Matt Blckler |
Blackler's practise often explores an absurd logic, developed with a relation to objects and processes commonly found in society, these are altered through labour intensive and outmoded techniques to serve a warped master-plan.

Panorama
Iceberg in Mist, Eisberg im Nebel 1982. 70 cm x 100 cm. Oil on canvas |
Covering nearly five decades, and coinciding with the artist’s 80th birthday, Gerhard Richter: Panorama at Tate Modern is a major retrospective exhibition that brings together together significant works from his remarkable career. An amazing colletion of work including a couple of my favourite glass sculptural pieces.
His works do not attempt to describe the world around us though often they reflect it, but rather to explore the technologies of this representation and the ways in which they inflect our perception. In his exploration of these technologies painting remains a pre-eminent tool. As such, probably no other artist has done more to sustain the relevance and immediacy of painting as a mdium over the past fifty years.

The Shape of Things to Come?
I generally feel underwhelmed visiting the Saatchi Gallery exhibitions, but this work The Milky Way by Björn Dahlem played heavily on my penchant for fluorescent tubes.
Björn Dahlem makes room-sized sculptures that represent abstract concepts of space and matter. His creations are based not on stability, but on fragility which he sees as the defining condition of human knowledge. His low-tech wood and light assemblages allude to cosmic theories and philosophy, re-imagining the ways the universe is understood in startlingly simplified terms.

GARAGE
I know, I know it has been ages, and the summer is now pretty much over. But we have been up to stuff, promise. The first of our highlights was David MacDairmid's architectural installation as part of the GARAGE exhibition hosted by Garage for the Edinburgh Arts Festival. A beautiful almost ephemeral line sculpture that weaves it's way through from the interior of the exhibition space through the window and into the garden.
Presenting work since 2006, GARAGE invited a series of projects from selected artists that were researched, developed and then exhibited in August 2011. Selected UK-based international artists exhibited site-specific, collaborative work, developed during a series of micro-residencies including new work by Rebecca Key, Sarah Kenchington, Holly Fulton, Bob Moyler, Belinda Gilbert Scott, Ailie Rutherford, David MacDiarmid, Kirsten Welsh, Grimes & Jones, Sharon Quigley, Thomas MacGregor, Owen Davison, Kirsten Welsh, Jo Arksey, Christine Hilditch and Emma Bowen.
This year also featured The Pip Caravan, a magical mobile Puppet Theatre – from Sokobauno.

Casa Da Musica
Although we didn't get the chance to see a performance here, we did have a look around this inspirational piece of archiiecture
Rem Koolhaas & Ellen van Loon - Office for Metropolitan Architecture's Casa da Música, was conceived to mark 2001, the year in which Porto was Cultural Capital of Europe, and it is the first new building in Portugal to be entirely dedicated to music - to the presentation and public enjoyment of music, to music education and to the creation of music.

Call for project proposals: IMMEDIATE TERRITORY
Magdalen Road Studios' IMMEDIATE TERRITORY is a one day art exhibition taking place on 29 October 2011 in Oxford's Magdalen Road. It will showcase works that take the perception of the multi-faceted, often disparate realities of the city as their subject matter, either directly or metaphorically. The goal of the exhibition is to create a one day art show which is a complex and contradictory, therefore surprising and intellectually challenging reflection of the city. For more information see the exhibition page on the Magdalen Road Studios website
Final deadline for receiving applications is 30 June 2011. Please email a CV, a project proposal (single A4 sheet maximum) and visual support material for your project (documentation of past projects - no more than 5 photographs; and/or sketches or plans - no more than 5 images) to katalin@magdalenroadstudios.com . One day left to see Planning for Paradise!
Last chance to see Planning for Paradise.
Thur - Sat 12-5pm
The Project Room. Jericho Community Centre. 33a Canal Street. Oxford. OX2 6HB
Planning for Paradise poses the question: What are the aesthetic trends of protest and social activism today?
Taking contemporary examples of social activism and radical conservatism as a point of departure, Louis Jack, Peter Shenai, James Sutton and Thomas Watson, four final year students at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, University of Oxford, collaborate on an installation entitled Planning for Paradise at The Project Room, Jericho between 4th and 7th May.
An assimilation of works in a variety of media deal with issues of cultural unrest, specifically focusing on discourse surrounding British education. Planning for Paradise will address the themes of critical impotence, authorship and the space of image production and consumption.

Angela De La Cruz at Lisson Gallery
We went to visit this last week...came away inspired...
'De la Cruz’s work is both unapologetically raw and darkly humorous, possessing a physicality that is as much influenced by the work of comics such as Jacques Tati, Charlie Chaplin and Harold Lloyd as it is by the visceral nature of Goya’s painting. Through violent interventions she anthropomorphises her work, manipulating and deconstructing her canvases and materials so that they appear broken, crumpled and collapsed. Twisted and deflated, her works lie as crushed or crumpled bodies on the gallery floor and wall.'

Paper Girl Oxford
A brilliant idea from the Oxford Cycle Workshop folk: Paper Girl is a celebration of Art, Bicycles and the act of giving. The ride part involves riding around our beautiful city and give away bundles of art to members of the public, for free. First they need to collect some art from the people of Oxford so they are asking everyone to submit art work (the submission deadline is April 29th). They will exhibit everything they receive, and throw a big party on May 6th (the day before the ride). The morning of the ride they will roll the art works into groups in preparation for distributing. Last year Paper Girl Manchester gave away over 800 pieces of art in 212 rolls by bicycle, to random people on the streets of Manchester. This year Oxford is getting involved and running a Paper Girl ride too... From drawings, doodles to photography and screen prints to painting, submit up to 10 pieces of work to be part of Papergirl Oxford. Every artist will be featured in the exhibition at Oxford Cycle Workshop Training Centre on Glanville Road. To submit work drop it in, or post it to Papergirl Oxford, Oxford Cycle Workshop Training Centre, Ashlar House, Glanville Road Oxford OX4 2DD Work should be between A4 and A1 in size. Please write your name, url and Paper Girl Oxford on your submission. By submitting work you are consenting to your work being exhibited by Paper Girl Oxford and given out free of charge to the public as part of the Cycle Oxford Festival 2011. Deadline: 29th April 2011 (don't forget) |

Anthony McCall - ‘Vertical Works’ at Ambika P3, University of Westminster.
Sprüth Magers Berlin London presents a major solo exhibition by Anthony McCall featuring ‘Vertical Works’ at Ambika P3, University of Westminster.
Over the past five years McCall has explored solid-light works that are oriented vertically – projecting downwards from the ceiling onto the floor, forming 10-metre tall, conical ‘tents’ of light, with a base of about 4 metres. Here, the projected line-drawing on the floor is, quite literally, the footprint of the work, with the three-dimensional ‘body’ rising up from the floor and finally narrowing to a point at the lens of the projector, well-above one’s head. From the point-of-view of the observer, the vertical pieces create a profoundly different type of encounter. Four of these works, are on display in the UK for the first time, presented as a single installation in the Ambika P3 exhibition space. The works are You and I (II)Breath III (2005), Skirt (I)(2010) and Meeting You Halfway (2009) (2005-11).

A History of Sound Art
Listen Up! went to see and hear Joel Cahen's presentation on his recent Wet Sounds installation series along side an airing of a great new composition A History of Sound Art, 12/02/2011 at Modern Art Oxford
An insightful retrospective into the craft of sound and its development as an artistic practice.
A History of Sound Art is an engaging and educational 85 min stereo audio journey from the man "more responsible than any one else for creating the modern world" Thomas Edison,"No one did more to shape the physical/cultural make up of present day civilization", by inventing the phonograph & recording, through to the winner of this years Turner Prize, Susan Philipsz.A History of Sound Art audibly plots the development of the media through snippets of Dada & Futurist noise instruments, the first electronic music for magnetic tape, with flashes of Fluxus compositions and artist's sound-scapes.
Composed and Arranged by J Milo Taylor
Mixed by Joel Cahen
